THE BC SPORTS HALL OF FAME

The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is internationally recognized as the ‘go to’ organization for BC sport heritage. For over 40 years, we have honoured BC’s teams, builders, athletes, pioneers, and media through the annual induction ceremony, The Banquet of Champions. To date we have 319 individuals and 54 teams inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame – individuals and teams who have accomplished greatness in sport and brought pride to British Columbia. With over 25,000 artifacts and 20,000 archival documents representing 100 years of sporting accomplishments in British Columbia, the BC Sports Hall of Fame honours, educates and inspires through its Hero In You® educational program.

OUTREACH

The featured outreach collection includes, but is not limited to, artifacts from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games, as well as from rugby, figure skating and soccer. Through an expansion of the BC Sports Hall of Fame’s Hero In You® educational program and the successful BC Sport Heritage® rental program, this unique program and collection is accessible to municipalities, sport associations, classrooms and community groups through British Columbia.

BC Sport Heritage® Program – Artifacts on Loan
The collection and the stories of the most extraordinary accomplishments in BC sport are shared with our community through exhibitions, programming and by making our collection records, our research and the historical documents held in our collection available to the public on a short term loan.

A very unique program provides British Columbians with an opportunity to share the spirit and the legacy of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our collection encompasses 3,000+ Olympic/Paralympic-related artifacts from British Columbian athletes, promoting our provincial accomplishments in sport on the world stage. This is a very unique and ideal way to continue to promote the spirit of the 2010 Winter Games.

Examples of temporary displays during the 2010 Games include those in place at Orchard Park Shopping Mall, Kelowna and at Deloitte House, Vancouver. In addition, as part of our Olympic programming, the Hall of Fame partnered with the City of Vancouver to be part of the Community Happenings Festivals at Kitsilano, Killarney, and Sunset Community Centres, engaging and educating families on British Columbia’s role in the Olympic/Paralympic movement.

“The intention of the Community Happenings Festivals was to bring the “Games” experience to Vancouver neighbourhoods outside the downtown core and the BC Sports Hall of Fame was a key partner in creating a festive, exciting and engaging event experience for the community”.

– Manabu Koshimura, Community Celebration Coordinator, City of Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Operations

THE BC SPORTS HALL OF FAME COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

Embracing the BC Sport Heritage Program, the BC Sports Hall of Fame is taking artifacts, archival documents and educational programming into the community. This Community Experience provides a very unique element to overall corporate and community programming, providing a lasting memory of BC’s greatest moments in sport.

Examples include:

July, 2010 – The Trail Smoke Eaters Alumni Banquet and Golf Tournament. The Hall of Fame’s exhibits showcased the Honoured Members from the Trail area. For the first time, the Hall of Fame displayed some of its 2010 Olympic artifacts. The displays engaged local families, Honoured Members, Smoke Eaters Alumni and sports organizations.

July, 2010 – BC Summer Games, Langley. The Hall’s displays included the text panels celebrating the story, the impact and the legacy of the games in communities throughout BC.

September, 2010 – Penticton. The Vancouver Canucks Training Camp. The Hall set up a hockey-related exhibit celebrating the Canucks’ 40th Anniversary in the NHL at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

To date the BC Sports Hall of Fame Community Experience has been present at community events in the Lower Mainland, the Interior, and the Okanagan since May 2010. Over 250,000 people in BC have engaged with the BC Sports Hall of Fame Community Experience.
